Why Cañada Road's Car-Free Sundays Skip the Holidays, and How to Plan Around Them

Most Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., San Mateo County Parks closes 3.8 miles of Cañada Road to cars, from Highway 92 to the Filoli entrance, along Crystal Springs Regional Trail. For those six hours the road belongs to cyclists, joggers, walkers, skaters and families with strollers. Three Sundays left in 2026 won't have the closure: October 11, November 29 and December 27. Each one falls on a holiday weekend, and in every case the cause is the same: no ranger is free to close the road.

That one staffing detail explains most of how Bicycle Sunday works. The event depends on a person being on site. It is not a fixed feature of the road. Seeing it that way also explains why the parking rules look the way they do, and how to plan the fall around the off weeks.

Six hours, one ranger

The road closure is not run on autopilot. According to the San Mateo County Parks Foundation, its funding pays for a San Mateo County park ranger to close Cañada Road to cars and stay on site as a first responder. On three-day holiday weekends, the same article explains, visits climb across the county's 24 parks, and those parks need the rangers' attention.

So the Sundays that drop out are the Sundays when the whole park system is busiest. In February, Palo Alto Online listed eight holiday-weekend cancellations for 2026: February 15, May 24, June 21, July 5, September 6, October 11, November 29 and December 27. Five of those have passed. The last three are bunched into the final quarter of the year, which is why fall is the season when a habit of going every Sunday is most likely to run into a closed-off week.

The County's October 5 notice gives "staffing shortages" as the reason for the October 11 cancellation. The Burlingame-Hillsborough Times reported the next day that the County has not described the shortage in public or said whether it could affect other dates. For now, the posted schedule is limited to holiday weekends. The County's program page also says any Sunday can be called off for weather, conditions or staffing.

A race series helps pay for the quiet

The ranger shift is paid for partly by cyclists who come to the area to ride fast. Peninsula Velo is a Bay Area nonprofit cycling club focused on racing, recreational riding and advocacy. It runs the Beat the Clock time trial series and has backed Bicycle Sunday through the Parks Foundation. In January 2026 the Foundation reported that the club would make another donation for Bicycle Sunday, larger than the last one, because Beat the Clock drew more riders in 2025. The Foundation did not publish the amount.

The club's president put the reasoning this way in the Foundation's article:

"Most members of Peninsula Velo live in San Mateo County. Many have families, so supporting Bicycle Sunday is a natural way for our club to show support for our community and help SMC Parks provide a scenic and safe location for bicyclists of all abilities to go for a ride."

An earlier Foundation article, from December 2024, said Beat the Clock proceeds were already supporting Bicycle Sunday and that volunteers did the timing for the series. Racing on one day helps pay for a slower, family-paced road on another. A child learning to ride without training wheels near the Pulgas Water Temple is benefiting from entry fees paid by time trialists.

The rest of the fall, Sunday by Sunday

The three cancelled Sundays are not quiet weekends along the corridor. Two of them overlap with other closures or busy seasons nearby. This table shows what is already scheduled.

Sunday Cañada Road closure Also on the calendar nearby
October 11 Cancelled; road stays open to cars Serpentine Trail at Edgewood Park & Preserve closed between markers 16 and 19, Oct. 10–11, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for volunteer restoration. Filoli's Autumn Days and evening Nightfall are both in season.
October 18 and 25, November 1 Scheduled as usual Autumn Days and Nightfall at Filoli continue through November 1.
November 8, 15 and 22 Scheduled as usual Holidays at Filoli begins November 14 and runs until 10 p.m.
November 29 Cancelled; Thanksgiving weekend Holidays at Filoli in season.
December 6, 13 and 20 Scheduled as usual Holiday wreath workshops at Filoli between December 8 and 18.
December 27 Cancelled; Christmas weekend Holidays at Filoli continues through January 10, 2027.

October 11 is the tightest. On a normal Sunday, Edgewood's trails are an option for anyone who wants to stay off pavement. That weekend, the County has closed part of the Serpentine Trail during the exact hours Bicycle Sunday would usually run. Filoli's Nightfall runs September 26 through November 1, from 5:30 to 10 p.m. with last entry at 8:30, and is closed only on October 8. That makes an evening visit on the holiday weekend possible.

The Thanksgiving and Christmas cancellations both land during Holidays at Filoli, which runs November 14, 2026 through January 10, 2027. It includes daytime visits to the house and garden plus an evening Holiday Lights program. A Merry & Bright Preview Night is scheduled for November 13. Filoli's calendar lists the house and garden closed December 24 and 25. Filoli suggests booking ahead because weekends, holidays and busy seasons can sell out. Ticket holders are asked to check in during the one-hour window they chose. Filoli also has a Thanksgiving centerpiece floral workshop on November 23 and 24, the week before the Thanksgiving cancellation.

Why the parking ends up on the shoulder

A road that is closed only for a morning has no event parking of its own. On closure Sundays the County directs people to park on Edgewood and Cañada roads and at the north end near Highway 92. It specifically asks visitors not to use the parking lot or restrooms at Filoli Historic House & Garden.

The obvious backup has its own weekend rules. The SFPUC keeps the Pulgas Water Temple lot open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Saturdays, Sundays and federally observed holidays the lot is closed. Hikers and cyclists can still come in through the pedestrian gate from 9 to 5. The grounds close to the public during Saturday wedding ceremonies. On a Bicycle Sunday, the Temple works as a stop along the route but not as a place to start.

A practical sequence for a closure Sunday, built only from what the County and SFPUC post:

  1. Check the County's Bicycle Sunday page that morning, or call the Parks District Office at (650) 851-1210. Weather, conditions and staffing can all cancel a date.
  2. Park along Edgewood or Cañada roads, or at the Highway 92 end, and leave Filoli's lot alone.
  3. Bring your own water. The County lists restrooms at Edgewood Park & Preserve, about 1.2 miles away, and at the Pulgas Water Temple.
  4. Leave the ball and frisbee at home. Strollers are welcome, but the County does not allow ball or frisbee play on the closed road.
  5. Groups need a permit. Large organized groups of cyclists, skateboarders, rollerbladers or walkers need an event permit from the parks reservation desk at (650) 363-4021.

The County's posted Bicycle Sunday route ends at the Filoli entrance. The stretch of Cañada Road from Edgewood Road to Filoli stays open to traffic the whole time. Families with young riders should turn around at the Filoli gate.

When the road belongs to cars again

On cancelled Sundays, the County's guidance is short: cyclists and drivers should share the road. One detail about the corridor matters a lot here. The Crystal Springs segment of the regional trail starts at Highway 92 and runs along the west side of Cañada Road toward the Pulgas Water Temple, Filoli and Edgewood. County Parks lists that path for hikers, joggers and equestrians, not cyclists. So on October 11, November 29 and December 27, a rider who would normally take the car-free lane has no off-road path to switch to along this stretch. The trail next to the road suits walkers and runners. Cyclists share Cañada Road with traffic.

For a calmer ride on those weekends, the alternative is farther north. The Sawyer Camp segment of the Crystal Springs Regional Trail runs from Hillcrest Boulevard to Crystal Springs Road. It was set aside for non-vehicle recreation and paved for cycling in 1978. County Parks describes the regional trail as a planned 17.5 miles, with 15.3 miles complete. Its trail page sends visitors to the advisories list and closure email alerts for current conditions. That page is the one to check before switching routes.

After December 27, every holiday-weekend cancellation on the 2026 schedule will have passed. Whether the same eight-weekend pattern carries into 2027 depends on ranger staffing, and the County has not said.
